Somali upper house warns of worsening drought crisis

MOGADISHU — The Somali Upper House has raised a grave alarm over the rapid and unprecedented deterioration of the humanitarian situation caused by a severe drought sweeping across vast areas of the country. Officials warned that the crisis is threatening the livelihoods of millions and pushing the nation toward a state of extreme emergency.

The Chairman of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) delivered an emergency briefing to lawmakers, revealing that over 4.7 million Somalis are currently facing acute drought conditions. He emphasized that the current situation is far from normal, with rural communities suffering from a total collapse of essential resources due to the combined effects of climate change and successive climate shocks.

The Upper House called for strengthened coordination between national authorities and international partners to scale up urgent humanitarian response to meet the rising needs.

Somalia is grappling with one of the longest and harshest droughts in its recent history. The failure of multiple consecutive rainy seasons has resulted in the total depletion of water sources and massive livestock deaths—the primary livelihood for the majority of the population. This has triggered large-scale internal displacement toward urban centers.

Humanitarian reports indicate that this crisis strikes at a time when the agricultural sector is structurally vulnerable, placing the international response in a race against time to avert further human suffering.
