Mogadishu refutes aid looting allegations, confirms safety of relief stocks

MOGADISHU — The Federal Government of Somalia has categorically denied reports of humanitarian aid looting in the capital, Mogadishu, affirming that all relief shipments belonging to the World Food Programme (WFP) remain securely under the program’s direct management and custody.

In an official statement, the Somali government clarified that the warehouse in question is located within the Mogadishu Port premises, currently undergoing redevelopment and expansion. It emphasized that these construction activities have not interfered with the administration or distribution of humanitarian aid.

Furthermore, the government announced the formation of a joint technical committee to review the matter in coordination with international partners, reinforcing its commitment to transparency and accountability.

This rebuttal follows the US Department of State’s decision to suspend aid programs to Somalia based on allegations of the illegal seizure of 76 metric tons of food supplies. While Washington underscored its “zero-tolerance” policy regarding the diversion of aid intended for vulnerable populations, Mogadishu maintained that such claims are inaccurate and necessitated a joint technical review to safeguard its partnership with international donors.
