SNA mobilizes units to support drought-affected citizens

MOGADISHU — In a move reflecting the close cohesion between the military establishment and society, and embodying the humanitarian role played by the armed forces during crises, national efforts are accelerating to save lives and protect assets. This underscores that defending the nation’s borders goes hand in hand with providing relief to citizens and enhancing their livelihood security.

Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud, Commander of the Somali National Army (SNA), has issued urgent directives to all sectors of the armed forces to intervene immediately and participate effectively in national relief operations to support citizens affected by the severe drought hitting vast regions of the country.

The Army Commander emphasized in an official statement that the responsibility of the “Protectors of the Nation” extends beyond traditional defensive tasks to include standing firmly by the people during emergency humanitarian circumstances, considering the response to the relief call an integral part of the military doctrine.

Military leadership directed field units to transform into a civil support force working to secure and deliver drinking water to the most parched regions, ensuring the flow of vital supplies to stricken communities facing acute shortages in water resources.

The military instructions also included supervising the distribution of food, medicine, and urgent medical supplies, as well as providing all forms of logistical support to field relief teams to minimize the human and material losses resulting from this natural disaster.

Brigadier General Ibrahim affirmed that the Somali Army’s doctrine, centered on protecting “land, people, and faith,” renders relief for those affected by drought and floods a sacred national duty and an authentic moral commitment, highlighting the high value of the Somali soldier in both peace and war.

In his statement, the Army Commander called upon all government institutions, donors, the private sector, businessmen, scholars, and elders to unite and act as a single entity in the comprehensive national relief campaigns.

This military initiative aims to bolster the spirit of fraternal solidarity, ensure the saving of lives, and provide a dignified livelihood for families who lost their properties and livestock, contributing to accelerating the recovery from drought repercussions and securing social stability.

These military maneuvers reaffirm the comprehensive role of the Somali Armed Forces in 2026 as an active force in development and humanitarian response, thereby strengthening mutual trust between the people and the military establishment.

The military establishment remains a fundamental pillar in the national disaster response system. Its direct involvement in relief work contributes to charting a new path for human security, transforming environmental challenges into success stories of solidarity and national unity under a single flag.
