Urgent Somali relief mission to combat drought in Galmudug

DHUSAMAREB — Within the framework of intensive humanitarian action to mitigate the risks of natural disasters, field efforts are accelerating to save lives and protect livelihoods in areas hardest hit by climate fluctuations, amid strenuous efforts to strengthen local resilience and provide essential resources to ensure social stability.

Mr. Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, Chairman of the Somali  Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), led an extensive relief mission in Galmudug State, covering the districts of Wisil, Adado, and Baxdo. This mission aimed to personally assess the scale of damages caused by the severe drought and lead emergency response operations on the ground.

The Chairman’s pivotal role included direct supervision of the delivery of 125 water tankers in Wisil and 100 water tanks in Baxdo. This strategic move aims to alleviate acute water shortages and secure clean water supplies for thousands of displaced families and pastoral communities who have lost their traditional water sources.

The SoDMA Chairman held high-level meetings with local response committees, reviewing alarming technical reports on livestock mortality and the degradation of vegetation. He directed an intensification of logistical support and an accelerated pace of aid distribution to ensure it reaches remote villages and the most vulnerable towns before the crisis worsens.

During his inspection tour, the Chairman emphasized the importance of activating early warning systems and ensuring close coordination between governmental and community levels. He reaffirmed that protecting livestock and food security lies at the heart of the agency’s priorities, especially after observing exceptional cases affecting the region’s ecological balance.

The field tour demonstrated high-level governmental commitment, as the Chairman sought to evaluate humanitarian needs from a field perspective. He pledged to continue mobilizing international and local resources to bridge funding gaps and ensure the continuity of relief programs, including food, medicine, and clean drinking water.

These leadership moves reflect the essential role played by SoDMA as a safety valve for addressing complex crises. The Chairman’s direct presence in the field facilitates immediate decision-making, which contributes to minimizing human and material losses and enhances the effectiveness of the national drought response plan.

The relief mission concluded by establishing an urgent roadmap to expand humanitarian interventions, focusing on sustainable solutions that integrate emergency relief with resilience-building projects to ensure the protection of Somali citizens’ dignity and assets amidst accelerating climate challenges.

Direct field leadership and coordinated action remain fundamental pillars for overcoming complex humanitarian crises. The initiatives led by the National Disaster Management Agency contribute to consolidating national solidarity and charting a path toward future stability that protects communities from the consequences of environmental disasters and forced displacement.
