Humanitarian efforts and digital tools combat malnutrition in Baidoa

BAIDOA — The official website of UNICEF has highlighted the intensive field efforts by healthcare workers at Baidoa District Hospital to combat acute malnutrition among children, supported by funding from European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO).

The official website of UNICEF reported that nutrition teams, including specialist Fadumo Abukar, screen and support between 50 to 100 children daily, providing expert counseling to mothers on complementary feeding and neonatal care. The report noted that these efforts serve as a vital lifeline for displaced and underprivileged families in the region.

According to the official website of UNICEF, the program utilizes advanced digital tools such as the (OGOW) digital nutrition registry and the Last Mile Supply Monitoring (LMSM) system. These technologies ensure that children are tracked from admission to recovery and maintain a steady supply of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), enhancing the reliability of services as stated by the official website of UNICEF.

The official website of UNICEF featured the story of “Mama Nimco,” a mother of 12, who saved her twin boys, Hasan and Husein, from malnutrition through this program. She emphasized that the technical and digital support provided by the hospital helped her overcome the challenges of displacement, embodying the success of international partnerships in building a resilient health system according to the official website of UNICEF.
