MOGADISHU – The People’s Republic of China has expanded its humanitarian support to Somalia through the signing of a new assistance agreement worth 15 million Chinese yuan, reaffirming Beijing’s continued support for Somalia’s efforts to address humanitarian crises and strengthen its national capacity to respond to disasters and emergencies. The new assistance comes as the country faces interconnected challenges caused by climate change, recurring droughts and floods, and continued displacement, increasing the need for international partnerships that can support affected communities and strengthen national institutions.
The agreement was signed in Mogadishu on Tuesday by the Chairman of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mr. Mohamud Moalim Abdulle, and the Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, Wang Yu, in the presence of officials and representatives of humanitarian institutions. The assistance is valued at 15 million Chinese yuan, equivalent to approximately USD 2.1 million, and is intended to support communities affected by crises and help provide essential assistance to populations facing difficult humanitarian conditions, while also supporting relief efforts and improving access to those most in need.
Chinese Ambassador Wang Yu reaffirmed his country’s commitment to continuing support for humanitarian response efforts in Somalia and strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas of shared priority, noting that relations between the two countries have expanded to include humanitarian assistance, development, infrastructure, health, education, and capacity building. The new assistance reflects China’s continued engagement with the Somali government, national institutions, and local partners to help improve humanitarian conditions and strengthen communities’ ability to cope with crises.
The Somali Disaster Management Agency plays a central role in leading and coordinating the national response to disasters and emergencies by working with government institutions and international and local partners, while developing preparedness and early-warning mechanisms and improving response capacity. The Chinese assistance is expected to support these efforts, particularly as Somalia seeks to strengthen the transition from responding after disasters occur toward prevention, early preparedness, and disaster risk reduction, helping reduce the impact of crises and strengthen community resilience.
The agreement forms part of a growing track of Somali-Chinese cooperation in humanitarian assistance, development, and capacity building, as Somalia continues to face multidimensional crises linked to climate, displacement, and humanitarian needs. The new Chinese support gives this cooperation an additional practical dimension and creates further scope for expanding partnerships aimed at supporting national institutions, improving humanitarian response, and strengthening the ability of affected communities to recover, contributing to Somalia’s longer-term stability and development.
