MOGADISHU — The Somali Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs announced today the commencement of a comprehensive nationwide census and assessment of Quranic schools, aimed at evaluating their current status and upgrading their educational environments.
According to the Hiiraan Online (HOL) news site, H.E. Sheikh Mukhtar Robow Ali, Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs, stated that the assessment seeks to diagnose the needs of these schools to enable the ministry to plan effectively and allocate resources. The initiative also addresses recent concerns regarding the suitability and safety of locations where Quranic education is conducted.
The news site reported that the Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to reviewing teachers’ conditions and qualifications, noting directives from the Somali leadership to transform these centers into appropriate learning spaces. Furthermore, the Minister called upon parents to eliminate discrimination in how they treat children attending Quranic schools compared to those in formal education, urging them to dress their children with the dignity that reflects the value of religious education.
As detailed by the news site, this move follows repeated calls for the federal government to reform and strengthen the Quranic school system across the country, ensuring that religious education is provided in safe, dignified, and well-equipped facilities
