MOGADISHU — The European Union has announced a new assistance package for the Federal Republic of Somalia exceeding $7 million, dedicated to bolstering humanitarian relief and enhancing human rights safeguards in support of the nation’s stability and development initiatives.
H.E. Francesca Di Mauro, the EU Ambassador to Somalia, explained—as reported by local press sources—that the funding aims to empower Somali civil society organizations to actively contribute to peace-building, improve livelihoods, and expand rights protections amidst escalating humanitarian challenges triggered by persistent drought.
Local press sources stated that this support is a result of recent dialogues between Somali leadership and international partners, during which they agreed to amplify collaborative efforts targeting communities most severely affected by the ongoing crisis.
According to local press sources, the new assistance serves a dual purpose: addressing the immediate impact of the drought and building institutional capacity to strengthen Somalia’s resilience against future crises. This reflects the EU’s commitment to supporting rights-based governance and sustainable development in the region.
