Puntland strengthens environmental partnerships to combat climate

GAROWE — The Ministry of Environment, Pasture, and Climate Change of Puntland State, Somalia, held a series of extensive coordination meetings today, Sunday, with delegations from “Save the Children” and “CARE” International. The discussions focused on exploring strategic cooperation avenues in environmental protection and enhancing climate change resilience, hosted in the administrative capital, Garowe.

The first session, attended by H.E. Aidarus Ahmed Farah Adde, Minister of Environment, Pasture, and Climate Change, and his delegation, along with representatives from “Save the Children,” reviewed the outcomes of joint environmental projects. The discussion evaluated performance indicators in natural resource management and addressed solutions to overcome technical challenges facing field programs to ensure their long-term sustainability.

In a related context, the Ministry met with the “CARE” International delegation to discuss advancing partnerships in environmental programs and community development. The focus was directed toward supporting rural communities most affected by droughts, aiming to improve their environmental resilience and integrate awareness and capacity-building programs into future operational plans for both parties.

During both meetings, the two sides underscored the importance of advancing joint work and sharing technical expertise. They highlighted that strengthening international cooperation is a fundamental pillar for implementing effective environmental interventions that contribute to protecting local ecosystems and ensuring the sustainability of natural resources amidst the region’s escalating challenges.

The meetings concluded with an agreement to enhance institutional and technical coordination and to establish executive operational mechanisms. These measures ensure the expansion of environmental initiatives, achieve the state’s national goals regarding environmental stability and sustainable development, and directly support programs that strengthen the resilience of local communities against climate change.

Puntland State faces escalating climate-related impacts, including recurrent droughts and pasture degradation, placing significant pressure on natural resources. These partnerships between the Ministry of Environment and international organizations emerge as a vital tool for shifting the response from emergency relief to sustainable development. Such efforts aim to establish an integrated environmental framework based on adaptation and resilience-building, ensuring the preservation of livelihoods for future generations and promoting developmental stability across the state.
