Somalia links resource governance peacebuilding resilience

MOGADISHU — Director General of the Federal Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Somalia, Mr. Abdirisak Ahmed Ali, officially inaugurated a high-level workshop on “Peace-Positive Natural Resources Management,” organized in collaboration with the European Institute of Peace (EIP).

The workshop convened an extensive gathering of key representatives from relevant federal and state-level ministries, officials from the Banadir Regional Administration, alongside delegates from several prominent international partner agencies.

In his opening remarks, detailed on the Ministry’s Official Facebook Page, the Director General emphasized the paramount strategic importance of managing Somalia’s lands, water, pastures, and natural wealth through sustainable frameworks that bolster stability and climate adaptation.

The Somali official pointed out that natural resource governance is no longer just an isolated environmental priority, but has rather become a fundamental pillar for advancing social cohesion, consolidating national security, and supporting state-building processes.

This specialized workshop aims to deepen structural analysis regarding the nexus between climate change and local conflicts, while extracting effective, practical mechanisms to implement national blueprints intended to mitigate the socio-economic impacts of global warming.

Through this Euro-Somali partnership, the Ministry seeks to build an integrated matrix linking environmental sustainability with communal peace, by training national cadres in resolving resource-scarcity disputes and rehabilitating the most vulnerable communities.

These intensive efforts come at a critical time when the Horn of Africa faces severe climate fluctuations, requiring Somali institutions to take the lead in formulating proactive, flexible strategies that balance sustainable development needs with national security mandates.

The workshop reflects the commitment of the Federal Republic of Somalia to expanding cooperation with prestigious international institutes, aiming to foster technology transfer and build institutional capacities to counter cross-border environmental crises efficiently.

The European Institute of Peace (EIP) serves as a strategic partner for many developing nations in crafting mediatory solutions for resource-related disputes. This workshop constitutes an integral part of Somalia’s National Transformation Plan, which seeks to mainstream climate action into community stabilization and drought-resilience frameworks.
