Russia delivers humanitarian aid shipment to Somalia

MOGADISHU — Russia yesterday delivered 25 tons of emergency humanitarian assistance to the Government of Federal Republic of Somalia to support families affected by drought and deteriorating living conditions across several parts of the country.

The aid shipment arrived at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu, where it was officially handed over to Somali government officials in the presence of representatives from disaster management and humanitarian agencies.

The assistance includes food supplies and essential relief items such as tents, blankets, and emergency materials intended to support vulnerable families affected by worsening humanitarian conditions caused by drought and shortages of basic resources.

Mahmoud Moalim Abdulle, Chairman of the Somali Disaster Management Agency, described the shipment as an important contribution to ongoing humanitarian efforts in Somalia, expressing appreciation to the Russian government for responding to urgent humanitarian needs.

He noted that the Russian support highlights the importance of international cooperation in assisting Somalia during humanitarian crises and natural disasters, particularly as the number of families requiring emergency assistance continues to rise.

For his part, Rostislav Panos, Consul of the Russian Embassy for Somalia and Djibouti, said the Russian government decided to respond to a request submitted by the Somali Federal Government to provide urgent aid for communities affected by difficult humanitarian conditions.

He added that Moscow remains committed to supporting Somalia through humanitarian assistance aimed at easing civilian suffering and strengthening relief efforts across the country.

Somalia is currently facing escalating humanitarian challenges driven by recurring droughts, rising food insecurity, and worsening economic conditions, all of which have significantly increased humanitarian needs in several regions.

The latest shipment follows previous humanitarian assistance provided by Russia to Somalia in recent years as part of broader international efforts to support humanitarian stability and assist communities most affected by crises and natural disasters.

This emergency Russian response embodies an advanced strategic dimension in the bilateral relations between Moscow and Mogadishu. It marks the alignment of Russia’s desire to reinforce its diplomatic and humanitarian presence as a reliable partner in the Horn of Africa, with Somalia’s diligent efforts through the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) to overcome the impacts of complex natural crises and bridge funding gaps. Consequently, direct in-kind assistance gains pivotal value in saving lives, while opening new horizons for building a sustainable developmental partnership that serves the mutual interests of both friendly nations.
