Ministry of resettlement bolsters relief and displacement support in Hargeisa

HARGEISA — The Ministry of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs of Somaliland launched today in Hargeisa a large-scale relief campaign targeting hundreds of displaced families in new resettlement sites, as part of a comprehensive national strategy aimed at improving the living conditions of the most vulnerable groups, according to official ministry sources.

The campaign included the distribution of integrated food assistance to 450 families recently relocated to their own lands. H.E. Suleiman Dualeh Haji Jama, Minister of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs, supervised the distribution, reaffirming the government’s commitment to providing the foundations of a dignified life for all citizens.

These efforts coincided with another humanitarian initiative implemented by the Ministry in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), involving the distribution of non-food items (NFIs) to 400 families at the Naaso Hablood A camp, a move aimed at enhancing domestic stability and improving the living environment in the new official settlements.

The field events were attended by a high-level delegation, including Mr. Mukhtar Abdi Jama Baaxo, Director General of the Ministry, the Minister of Health Development, and the Chairman of the National Food Reserve Agency, alongside local authorities from Hargeisa region and Ahmed Maalin Harun district to ensure the highest levels of coordination.

The assistance provided in cooperation with international partners included a package of essential supplies: solar lighting systems, cooking utensils, blankets, shelter materials, bedding, and necessary household equipment contributing to raising the quality of daily life for the beneficiary families.

During the field tours, officials met with residents at the resettlement sites to listen to their basic requirements and assess the differences in living conditions between the previous and new locations, emphasizing that the relocation primarily aims to enable families to settle in safe and stable lands.

Officials praised the close cooperation between the Ministry and UNHCR, considering this strategic partnership a successful model for integrated humanitarian work that combines government support with international expertise to meet the growing needs of local and displaced communities.

The Ministry stressed that this assistance is not merely emergency support but an inherent part of a comprehensive development plan aimed at bridging gaps in basic services such as water, education, and healthcare in new resettlement areas, ensuring the sustainable integration of displaced persons.

The Minister affirmed in his statements that the government will continue to intensify relief efforts and seek durable solutions for displacement issues, noting that work is underway to develop infrastructure in these areas and provide an environment conducive to growth and social welfare.

The activities concluded by emphasizing the continuity of humanitarian interventions in coordination with international and local agencies, focusing on building the capacities of families to enable self-reliance and solidifying the rule of law to ensure a bright and secure future for all.

These comprehensive humanitarian actions in Hargeisa embody a firm political and moral commitment toward building a resilient society capable of overcoming displacement challenges. By integrating food support with logistical empowerment, the country lays the foundation for a future where displaced persons transition from aid recipients to active contributors to nation-building, under a system that protects their rights and preserves their human dignity as a non-negotiable supreme value.
