MOGADISHU — Somalia continues her economic renaissance journey and the cementing of her leadership in the livestock sector, as she announced on April 21, 2026, the inauguration of a new livestock quarantine facility in the Mudug region, in a strategic step that reflects her active partnership with the Sultanate of Oman and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), ensuring her exports comply with international standards.
The accreditation ceremony witnessed high-level attendance, as the Omani delegation was led by Dr. Salim Sulaiman Rashid, an expert from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, while the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) was represented by a specialized technical delegation including Dr. Yahannes Girma Maheri and Dr. Dominic Lokeris Kathaya from the
IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD).
During the site visit, the teams managing the facility briefed the visiting delegations on operational details, followed by a meticulous inspection tour covering the various sections of the quarantine facility to assess its technical and operational readiness to receive livestock in accordance with the highest approved protocols.
The delegations confirmed that this facility was developed according to the rigorous specifications set by the IGAD-ICPALD centre, and in full alignment with international systems followed in quarantine, ensuring animal safety, protecting public health, and enhancing the efficiency of veterinary oversight.
Following a comprehensive technical assessment of the infrastructure, the experts commended the advanced level of the centre, affirming that Somalia has succeeded in building this facility according to modern engineering and operational standards that place her among the nations capable of managing livestock quarantine with high efficiency and professional excellence.
This facility does not represent merely a service building, but is a strategic pillar through which Somalia seeks to strengthen the value chain of her livestock exports, ensuring for importers high quality and consistency in animal health standards, and protecting the livelihoods of her breeders.
With this achievement, Somalia enhances the confidence of international markets in her national products, opening broader trade routes for herself, and translating her ambition of transforming into a key and trusted trade partner in the global livestock sector, in a way that benefits her national economy.
The delegations pointed out that the positive impact of this project extends beyond Somali borders, offering pivotal support for the livestock trade and animal health sector in the Horn of Africa region, contributing to the stability of regional livestock flows and enhancing collective biosecurity.
This step comes at a vital strategic time, as livestock remains the backbone of the Somali economy, and the importance of this facility increases with the approach of the Eid al-Adha season, which represents the peak of demand for Somali exports in Gulf markets.
In conclusion, Somalia marches steadily toward a bright future in which she enhances her resources and safeguards her economic status; this initiative confirms that her land continues to overflow with goodness and growth, and that she is proceeding with the development of her national institutions with an ambitious vision that serves her children and supports her stability, so that her banner remains raised thanks to the efforts of her sons and daughters who are writing today the finest epics of construction, development, and prosperity.
