MOGADISHU — Somalia continues her economic renaissance journey and the cementing of her leadership in the livestock sector, as she announced on April 21, 2026, the inauguration of a new livestock quarantine facility in the Mudug region, in a strategic step that reflects her active partnership with the Sultanate of Oman and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), ensuring her exports comply with international standards.
The accreditation ceremony witnessed high-level attendance, as the Omani delegation was led by Dr. Salim Sulaiman Rashid, an expert from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, while the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) was represented by a specialized technical delegation including Dr. Yahannes Girma Maheri and Dr. Dominic Lokeris Kathaya from the
IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD).
During the site visit, the teams managing the facility briefed the visiting delegations on operational details, followed by a meticulous inspection tour covering the various sections of the quarantine facility to assess its technical and operational readiness to receive livestock in accordance with the highest approved protocols.
The delegations confirmed that this facility was developed according to the rigorous specifications set by the IGAD-ICPALD centre, and in full alignment with international systems followed in quarantine, ensuring animal safety, protecting public health, and enhancing the efficiency of veterinary oversight.
