BAIDOA — With a firm belief that the progress of societies begins with safeguarding women’s dignity and enhancing their leadership, the Somali government continues its diligent efforts to transform social challenges into promising opportunities, placing women’s empowerment at the forefront of national priorities for sustainable development.
In this context, H.E. Ambassador Khadiija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, Minister of Family and Human Rights Development of the Federal Republic of Somalia, held an extensive consultative meeting in Baidoa with representatives of women’s organizations to discuss ways to elevate the status of women in Southwest State.
The Somali National News Agency (SONNA) reported that the meeting delved into available opportunities and socio-economic pressures, where women’s groups presented detailed reports on urgent needs, praising the tangible steps taken by the Ministry to strengthen the framework of rights and social protection.
The Minister briefed participants on historic legislative milestones achieved by the Ministry, most notably the formalization of the 30% women’s quota in the Electoral Law and Political Parties Law, a strategic move ensuring effective and inclusive political participation in national decision-making.
Her Excellency also highlighted a package of laws enacted to protect women from all forms of violence, the prohibition of female genital mutilation, and the new Family Law, which grants broader legal protections to ensure the stability of the family unit.
The National Agency (SONNA) further noted in its coverage that the Minister unveiled ambitious future initiatives aimed at eliminating discrimination and enhancing women’s leadership capabilities across various sovereign and civil institutions in the country.
According to official SONNA reports, Minister Al-Makhzoumi called for unity and intensified collective action, emphasizing that women’s solidarity is the true key to overcoming current challenges and leveraging opportunities to build a more equitable and prosperous future.
The meeting concluded by emphasizing the formulation of a permanent coordination mechanism between the Ministry and local organizations to ensure sustained support and follow-up on policies, ensuring that these legislative visions translate into a tangible reality for women nationwide.
