Mogadishu bolsters food security through advanced agricultural programs

MOGADISHU — The Somali National News Agency (SONNA) reported that Eng. Mohamed Hassan Abdille, Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, inaugurated an advanced Training of Trainers (ToT) program on “Good Agricultural Practices” (GAP), primarily focusing on developing the production of strategic cereal crops in the country.

This specialized program, which relies on high-quality technical manuals and standards, aims to enhance the efficiency and responsiveness of national cadres working in the agricultural extension sector, including Ministry staff and partner institutions involved in rural development.

The training program seeks to equip participants with the latest scientific knowledge and practical skills necessary to consolidate sustainable farming systems, directly contributing to doubling local food production rates to meet current economic and environmental challenges.

Strengthening agricultural extension services is a fundamental pillar of the national strategy; SONNA Agency clarified in its report that these trained cadres serve as vital intermediaries in transferring modern technology to the fields, ensuring increased productivity and comprehensive food sovereignty.

This ambitious training initiative is implemented through a high-level strategic partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, the Somali National University, and the SomRep umbrella, a coalition of leading international organizations in sustainable agricultural development.

The program features broad participation from agricultural extension workers at both federal and state levels, reflecting a synergy of national efforts aimed at modernizing traditional farming methods and adopting more efficient practices across various regions.

The training officially commenced on March 23rd and is scheduled to conclude on the 27th, amid high aspirations to translate this knowledge into a tangible reality that transforms the country’s overall agricultural landscape.

This scientific movement, as documented by the Somali National Agency’s lens, brings together a constellation of stakeholders and experts to enhance knowledge sharing and build institutional capacities, which serve as the cornerstone for driving economic growth in the promising agricultural sector.

This training is part of a series of national initiatives aimed at reducing reliance on food imports by empowering farmers to use improved seeds and modern irrigation techniques that ensure agricultural continuity across various seasons and changing climatic conditions.

These scientific initiatives reaffirm that knowledge is the true driver of the agricultural sector’s revival, as investing in the capacity building of extension workers is an investment in the future of national food security. Through these cross-institutional partnerships, the nation is shaping a new era of productivity based on innovation and sustainability, ensuring the creation of resilient rural communities capable of turning environmental challenges into real opportunities for growth and prosperity.
