Qatar Charity distributes Zakat Al-Fitr to drought-affected communities in Somalia

MOGADISHU — In a humanitarian gesture embodying the highest values of solidarity and social compassion, and reaffirming the profound fraternal ties that unite nations during times of crisis, Qatar Charity (QC) has launched an extensive relief campaign to alleviate the suffering of affected groups in Somalia.

The Somali National News Agency (SONNA) reported that Qatar Charity, with the support of benevolent donors in the State of Qatar, implemented a campaign to distribute Zakat Al-Fitr in several Somali regions most affected by drought, targeting the neediest families ahead of Eid Al-Fitr.

Scope of Distribution and Beneficiaries

The agency noted that the campaign successfully distributed 2,702 food baskets, benefiting approximately 16,212 individuals across the Bay and Bakool regions in South West State, the Mudug region in Galmudug State, as well as the Banadir region and Hargeisa, as part of efforts to enhance food security.

Impact of the Drought Crisis

This humanitarian initiative comes amid the ongoing severe repercussions of drought waves that have directly impacted livelihoods, doubling the needs of displaced families and making relief interventions a vital necessity to ensure the basic requirements of local communities are met.

High-Level Diplomatic Commendation

Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalam Abad Ali, praised the pioneering humanitarian role of Qatar Charity, emphasizing that these initiatives contribute effectively to supporting vulnerable groups and strengthening comprehensive humanitarian response efforts in the country.

Parliamentary Appreciation

Mrs. Fatima Abad Ali, Second Deputy Speaker of the Galmudug State Parliament, expressed her appreciation for the timely arrival of aid to those entitled to it, commending the project’s efficiency and its ability to address the urgent needs of victims in remote areas.

Beneficiary Gratitude in Bakool

Regarding local feedback, Hassan Mumin Mohamed from the city of “Hudur” in the Bakool region expressed his deep gratitude, noting that the aid arrived at a critical time coinciding with the difficult living conditions imposed by the persistent drought in the South West State.

Joy in the Bay Region

In the city of “Dinsor” in the Bay region, Hawwa Ali Ibrahim confirmed that the food baskets directly helped alleviate her family’s living burdens, mentioning that this aid brought joy and happiness to households as the Eid days approach.

In a related context, Amna Sheikh Mahmoud from the “Heliwa” district in the Banadir region explained that this initiative represents vital support for low-income families, especially given the decline in available resources and the rising living costs faced by vulnerable families.
