MOGADISHU — In a step that strengthens institutional solidarity in the face of humanitarian crises, the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of the Federal Republic of Somalia has launched a comprehensive national appeal to mobilize the financial support necessary to bolster ongoing relief operations. This initiative seeks to mitigate the impact of the severe drought affecting vast parts of the country and provide a lifeline for the most vulnerable families.
H.E. Prof. Salim Alio Ibro, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, issued an official appeal to all government ministries and agencies to contribute to the emergency response plan led by the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA).
This move comes to confront the severe drought sweeping many regions, which has resulted in harsh humanitarian consequences, including mass displacement, loss of livelihoods, and the deterioration of food and water security.
The Ministry emphasized in its official circular that this initiative aims to enable SoDMA to expand its urgent interventions and ensure that essential aid reaches affected areas suffering from acute shortages of basic needs.
The initiative called on all federal institutions to provide voluntary financial donations to bolster the “National Disaster Response Fund,” contributing to saving lives and protecting property and livestock, which form the economic backbone of pastoralist communities.
The Ministry stressed the importance of a rapid response to this national appeal, considering the synergy between government entities as the cornerstone for the success of the national strategy to confront natural disasters and limit their severe impacts.
Relief efforts primarily target the most vulnerable groups, particularly children, women, and the elderly in rural areas, who face risks of acute malnutrition due to the lack of food and medical resources.
This appeal reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to activating internal solidarity mechanisms and unifying institutional efforts to ensure the efficient distribution of available resources toward urgent humanitarian priorities across all states.
The circular also noted that donations will be managed through official channels that guarantee transparency and accountability, enhancing trust in the national humanitarian system and supporting resilience against recurring climate challenges.
Through this step, the government seeks to build a sustainable model for local response, reducing total dependence on foreign aid and affirming the capacity of national institutions to manage major crises effectively and competently.
This national appeal transcends being a mere request for financial support; it serves as a humanitarian covenant that strengthens Somali unity in the face of adversity, affirming that investing in national relief is an investment in human dignity and a guarantee for the nation’s stability and the future of its generations.
