China donates $1 million to support Somalia’s drought response

MOGADISHU — The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has received a $1 million financial donation from the Government of the People’s Republic of China to bolster relief efforts for drought-affected communities across the country.

According to the Hiiraan Online (HOL) news site, H.E. Wang Yu, the Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, formally handed over the contribution during a high-level meeting with H.E. Mohamud Moallim Abdulle, Chairman of the agency. The Ambassador reaffirmed China’s commitment to sAupporting Somalia in tackling humanitarian crises driven by climate change.

The Hiiraan Online news site reported that the SoDMA chairman commended China’s rapid response to recent humanitarian appeals. He noted that Beijing’s support extends beyond financial aid to include the construction of federal state centers and strategic warehouses, which are vital for the efficient storage and delivery of emergency supplies.

As detailed by the Hiiraan Online news site, this assistance arrives as the country faces critically low seasonal rainfall. Most regions have received less than 10 millimeters of rain—well below the minimum required for farming—placing millions of people at risk of severe food insecurity.
