MOGADISHU — The Somali Ministry of Health announced today that more than 50 children have died from diphtheria since the beginning of this year, issuing urgent warnings regarding the severity of the infectious disease’s spread.
According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the ministry’s statement revealed that the fatalities were among children aged 5 to 15, while approximately 1,000 others have been infected. This situation has prompted an immediate response from health authorities to mitigate the crisis and contain the affected areas.
AFP reported that the ministry plans to launch an extensive national immunization campaign on December 15, covering all districts of the capital, Mogadishu. The campaign will target hospitals, schools, and other health facilities to ensure the vaccines reach the maximum number of eligible children.
Reports cited by Agence France-Presse noted that the Ministry of Health has urged parents to visit vaccination centers, emphasizing that the vaccine remains the safest and most effective means of preventing this bacterial respiratory disease, particularly given the challenging conditions the country faces due to prolonged conflict and humanitarian crises.
