Somali minister of family seeks Norwegian support for human rights

OSLO — In a significant diplomatic effort to advance national social development goals, Somalia’s Minister of Family Affairs and Human Rights, Ambassador Khadiija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, concluded a series of pivotal meetings in Oslo. The visit underscored the Somali government’s unwavering commitment to championing the rights of its most vulnerable citizens through strategic international partnerships.

According to a detailed report from the Shabelle Media Network, Minister Al-Makhzoumi engaged in substantive talks with Norwegian officials, including Kjetil Vevle, the Norwegian Secretary of Labour and Social Affairs.

These discussions, highlighted by the Shabelle Media Network, focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in social protection, particularly for children, persons with disabilities, and women. This collaboration reflects a shared vision of creating more inclusive and equitable societies.

The Somali delegation, which included the Ministry’s Director General, Mohamed Bashir Omar, and Abdullahi Mohamed Alas, a Somali-Norwegian elected council member, also met with Kristin Hagstad, Director General of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).

The Shabelle Media Network reported that this meeting explored new avenues for joint development projects, specifically those aimed at improving child welfare and empowering women across Somalia.

Minister Al-Makhzoumi emphasized the vital importance of building a long-term strategic alliance with Norway to foster sustainable social progress and uphold human rights.
