SoDMA hails $500,000 relief allocation for Awdal region

MOGADISHU — The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to allocate USD 500,000 in emergency humanitarian aid to assist communities affected by the ongoing drought in Awdal Region, northwestern Somalia.

In an official statement, SoDMA Chairman Mahmoud Moallim Abdullahi expressed appreciation for the government’s swift response, noting that the decision was based on a recent situational report submitted by the agency, outlining the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the region.

He emphasized that the funding represents a crucial first step toward alleviating the suffering of drought-stricken communities and reaffirms the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations in the face of worsening climate impacts and erratic rainfall patterns.

Mr. Abdullahi added that SoDMA teams are actively monitoring the situation on the ground in collaboration with humanitarian partners to ensure timely delivery of aid, urging continued support and scaled-up interventions to prevent further escalation of the crisis.

He further noted that Awdal is among the hardest-hit regions this season, with many households facing acute food and water shortages, coupled with a significant decline in livelihoods and basic living conditions.
