Qatar and Somalia boost jobs for youth

MOGADISHU — Somalia and Qatar have jointly launched a large-scale economic empowerment initiative designed to create sustainable livelihoods for Somali youth and low-income families, aiming to strengthen economic resilience and reduce reliance on humanitarian aid, according to GOOB JOOG NEWS.

The program was inaugurated Tuesday in Mogadishu in a ceremony attended by senior Somali officials and members of the Qatari diplomatic mission, including Somalia’s Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Yusuf Mohamed Adam, Qatar’s Ambassador to Somalia Dr. Abdullah bin Salem Al Nuaimi, and representatives from Qatar Charity, the program’s lead implementing partner.

Minister Yusuf Mohamed Adam told GOOB JOOG NEWS that the initiative represents a significant transition from short-term humanitarian support to long-term economic development, providing youth with the tools and opportunities to build stable livelihoods and contribute to national recovery.

The first phase of the program includes distributing 130 cargo tricycles and 130 motorized passenger tuk-tuks to young entrepreneurs, alongside 100 electric flour milling machines to support small businesses and agricultural value chains.

Abdulaziz Osman Mohamed, Deputy for Social Affairs of Banadir Region, praised the initiative for supporting employment and boosting local enterprises. Qatar’s Ambassador described the program as a reflection of strong bilateral ties and shared commitment to development and stability.

Abdelfattah Adam, Director of Qatar Charity Somalia, emphasized the program’s focus on practical, impactful solutions that help young people achieve self-reliance and economic independence.

This project is part of Qatar Charity’s broader engagement in Somalia, which spans education, healthcare, water, and livelihoods, with an emphasis on building resilient, self-sufficient communities nationwide.
