Emergency committee meets to address worsening crisis

MOGADISHU — Somalia’s National Emergency Committee convened in Mogadishu this week to review the country’s disaster preparedness and response mechanisms, as humanitarian needs intensify across drought-stricken regions.

The meeting, chaired by Minister of Health Dr. Ali Haji Aden, brought together senior government officials, civil society representatives, and the Chairman of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mohamoud Moallim Abdulle.

Discussions focused on strengthening emergency medical services, with particular emphasis on upgrading equipment at response centers and enhancing the country’s capacity to handle climate-related shocks and recurring natural disasters.

Officials at the meeting also urged the launch of a nationwide fundraising campaign, calling on the government, private sector, and the public to unite in supporting relief operations and boosting community resilience.

“This is about taking action before disaster strikes,” said Dr. Aden, underscoring the urgency of early intervention and coordinated planning to mitigate the impact of future crises.

The meeting comes at a time when several parts of Somalia are experiencing worsening humanitarian conditions due to prolonged drought, mass displacement, and limited access to basic services. Aid agencies continue to warn of rising needs amid funding shortfalls and increasing vulnerability among affected populations.
