MOGADISHU — In response to the devastating effects of the La Niña-induced drought, Somalia’s National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has dispatched two aircraft carrying vital food relief shipments to Garbaharey, the provincial capital of the Gedo region. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the agency to provide much-needed assistance to vulnerable communities affected by prolonged dry conditions across the country.
The two planes landed in Garbaharey on Friday afternoon , delivering essential supplies aimed at alleviating the suffering of thousands of residents grappling with food insecurity and water shortages. The drought has particularly strained rural areas in Gedo, leaving families in dire need of humanitarian aid.
The La Niña weather phenomenon has exacerbated already harsh conditions in Somalia, leading to reduced rainfall, failed harvests, and dwindling water resources. The Gedo region, known for its reliance on agriculture and pastoralism, has been particularly hard hit, with many families forced to migrate in search of sustenance.

Residents in Garbaharey expressed gratitude for the timely intervention. “This assistance will provide much-needed relief to our families. We hope for continued support as we rebuild our lives,” one community elder said.
SoDMA has urged the international community to increase their support for Somalia’s drought response efforts, highlighting the urgent need for resources to address the crisis. According to humanitarian reports, millions remain at risk of severe hunger and malnutrition across Somalia due to the ongoing drought conditions.
