MOGADISHU — Somalia Health Ministry on Tuesday confirmed 8 more Coronavirus-related deaths and 70 amid the second wave of the pandemic in the horn of the African nation.
This pushes the number of fatalities to 576 while the number of confirmed infections stands at 11,978, according to the latest update by the Ministry of Health.
The Ministry said there were 41 new recovery cases bringing the total number of recoveries to 5058.
A joint report by the government and the UN Somalia’s economy contracted by 1.5 per cent in 2020 shedding off $186 million owing to the combined effect of COVID-19.
According to the report, the country also lost a growth opportunity of US$ 300 million as a result of the contraction. It noted that the ongoing assessment of the impact of COVID-19 shows that it could be worse than the 2017 drought.
