MOGADISHU – The Somali government has repatriated 161 citizens from Yemen after years of living in refugee camps, as part of efforts to bring Somali nationals stranded abroad back home amid the continuing conflict and its humanitarian consequences.
The returnees arrived at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu. The group included women, children and elderly people. They were received by Liban Abdi igal, Commissioner of the National Agency for Refugees and Displaced Persons, alongside officials from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The National Agency for Refugees and Displaced Persons said that up to 200 additional Somali citizens are expected to be repatriated from Yemen in the coming days with UNHCR support, although no specific arrival date was provided.
Yemen has hosted Somali refugees for decades, particularly since Somalia’s civil war began in the early 1990s. The continuing conflict in Yemen and the deterioration of living conditions and essential services have further complicated refugees’ circumstances. These return operations underscore the importance of coordination between the Somali government and humanitarian partners to facilitate voluntary, safe and dignified returns and provide the support returnees need to regain stability and reintegrate into their communities.
