MOGADISHU – The United Nations Humanitarian Air Service continues its efforts to support the delivery of life-saving humanitarian assistance to people living in remote areas of Somalia, particularly communities that face difficulties in being reached by road, as humanitarian actors seek to ensure the continued delivery of essential supplies to those most in need.
Through its flights, the service transports food, nutrition supplies and other relief items intended for people requiring assistance, providing a means of reaching areas where long distances, difficult roads or field conditions pose challenges to land-based transportation.
In this context, a number of humanitarian officials, including Carl Skau, Acting Executive Director of the World Food Programme, visited the towns of Buurhakaba and Dolow, where they observed how humanitarian air services help facilitate the movement of personnel and humanitarian supplies to targeted areas.
Air transport services are particularly important in supporting humanitarian operations in Somalia, where security conditions, road conditions or long distances can prevent some areas from being reached regularly by land. Air transport helps facilitate the movement of humanitarian personnel and the delivery of assistance to locations facing logistical challenges that make access difficult.
The visit to Buurhakaba and Dolow also highlighted the importance of cooperation between humanitarian actors and air transport services in improving access to remote communities and facilitating relief activities in areas requiring alternative means of transportation, thereby supporting the continuity of humanitarian operations and strengthening their ability to respond to the needs of the population.
The United Nations Humanitarian Air Service and the World Food Programme said these efforts form part of operations aimed at supporting the most vulnerable groups and contributing to saving lives by providing air transport services that enable personnel and supplies to reach targeted areas.
Humanitarian air transport represents one of the means supporting relief operations in areas facing challenges related to land access, enabling personnel and supplies to reach locations where movement by road may be limited or difficult. In Somalia, such services help strengthen links between humanitarian operational hubs and remote areas and support the continued delivery of assistance to communities in need, particularly in locations where field and logistical conditions restrict movement by road.
