MOGADISHU – The Chairperson of Somalia’s National Independent Human Rights Commission, Dr. Maryam Qasim Ahmed, today Wednesday discussed with the Federal Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, Ali Yusuf Ali (Hosh), ways to strengthen institutional cooperation and coordinate efforts in protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms, as well as a number of issues related to stability, reconciliation and accountability, during a meeting held in the capital, Mogadishu.
Dr. Maryam Qasim Ahmed stressed the importance of strengthening the partnership between the Commission and government institutions, noting that safeguarding human rights and fundamental freedoms is an important pillar of efforts to build the state, consolidate stability and support national reconciliation processes. She called for the development of coordination and information-sharing mechanisms that would contribute to more effective monitoring of human rights issues and responses to them, while taking into account the needs of groups and communities most exposed to risks.
For his part, Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation Ali Yusuf Ali (Hosh) affirmed the importance of maintaining communication and consultation with the National Independent Human Rights Commission, explaining that coordinated efforts among relevant national institutions can strengthen work in the areas of stability, reconciliation and accountability. He stressed the importance of exchanging views on issues of common concern in a manner that supports the integration of human rights principles into government work and strengthens respect for citizens’ rights.
The meeting addressed a number of common priorities and issues, including the development of cooperation between the Ministry and the Commission and strengthening the integration of human rights into government programmes and policies related to local communities. The participants also discussed the importance of establishing more effective channels for communication, follow-up and information exchange to help monitor human rights issues and address them within the established institutional and legal frameworks.
The meeting was attended by the Director-General of the National Independent Human Rights Commission, Mustafa Ahmed Mahmoud, and the Director-General of the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, Abdulqadir Ali. The participants discussed ways to strengthen technical and institutional coordination between the two sides and develop joint working mechanisms that would improve the response to human rights issues and support efforts to protect rights and freedoms and strengthen stability and reconciliation.
The meeting comes within the framework of national efforts to strengthen the role of human rights institutions in the state-building process, uphold the rule of law and accountability, and support stability and reconciliation in Somalia. Continued cooperation between the National Independent Human Rights Commission and the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation can contribute to developing more effective mechanisms for protecting rights and freedoms, strengthening attention to vulnerable groups and supporting the establishment of national institutions capable of responding to human rights challenges in a professional and systematic manner, thereby strengthening public confidence in institutions and supporting the path toward peace and stability.
