Hargeisa holds national meeting on refugee issues

HARGEISA – The Ministry of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs of the Government of Somaliland held a high-level national meeting on Sunday dedicated to refugee and asylum seeker affairs, with broad participation from government institutions and international partners, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional coordination and enhance the national response framework for displacement and asylum management.

The quarterly meeting forms part of regular government efforts to review the situation of refugees and asylum seekers across the territory, assess service delivery, and improve the effectiveness of national response mechanisms in line with growing humanitarian needs.

The meeting brought together senior officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defence, Interior, Health, Education, Justice, and Commerce, as well as security agencies and immigration authorities, representatives of the National Human Rights Commission, and key service institutions, including Hargeisa Group Hospital.

Participants also included representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), alongside international partners and humanitarian organizations, including the Danish Refugee Council (DRC). Discussions focused on existing challenges, service gaps, and ways to strengthen coordinated mechanisms to better support vulnerable groups.

The meeting concluded with an emphasis on sustaining periodic consultations and developing a unified national framework for refugee management, aimed at enhancing humanitarian and social stability and improving sustainable response mechanisms.

The refugee and asylum seeker file remains one of the most pressing humanitarian challenges in the region, amid increasing pressure on basic services and rising needs. Authorities stress that stronger coordination between national institutions and international partners is essential to building a more effective and sustainable response system capable of addressing evolving humanitarian challenges.
