KISMAYO – The Jubaland Police have stepped up efforts to protect women and children through a series of community outreach and field programmes in Kismayo, as part of a broader strategy to strengthen community security, prevent gender-based violence, and expand cooperation with civil society in promoting public safety and social protection.
As part of the initiative, the Police Unit for Combating Violence Against Women and Children held a coordination meeting with the Jubaland Youth Council and the Jubaland Women’s Organization to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between law enforcement agencies and community organizations.
The discussions focused on improving emergency response mechanisms, expanding public awareness campaigns, and strengthening safe reporting channels for victims of violence.
The unit also carried out a public awareness campaign across several neighborhoods and streets in
Kismayo, engaging directly with residents and delivering educational messages on preventing violence, protecting women and children, and encouraging communities to report abuse. The campaign aimed to strengthen public awareness while reinforcing cooperation between citizens and security institutions in addressing protection challenges.
Special attention was given to children living in vulnerable conditions, with police teams conducting outreach activities that emphasized children’s rights, psychological support, access to education, and the importance of providing safe environments that promote social inclusion and protect them from neglect and exploitation.
Protecting women and children remains a central priority within Jubaland’s ongoing police reform efforts. The state’s policing strategy combines law enforcement with preventive community engagement, recognizing partnerships with youth groups, women’s organizations, and local community leaders as essential to building public trust, reducing gender-based violence, and fostering a safer and more resilient society across Kismayo and the wider Jubaland State.
