SoDMA strengthens staff capacity through China training

MOGADISHU – The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) held an official farewell ceremony in Mogadishu for 25 technical and administrative trainees, as part of an advanced international training program in the People’s Republic of China aimed at strengthening disaster management capacity and emergency response readiness.

The program is part of a broader strategic plan by SoDMA to develop national expertise and build resilient institutional capacities capable of addressing increasing climate-related disasters, including improving early warning systems and enhancing rapid response mechanisms.

SoDMA stated that investing in human capacity development remains a core pillar in strengthening the disaster management sector, noting that such initiatives improve institutional coordination and enhance technical and administrative performance across emergency response structures.

During the ceremony, SoDMA Chairman Mohamoud Moalim Abdullahi urged participants to make full use of the training opportunity, represent the country in a professional manner, and ensure the transfer of knowledge and skills to their respective institutions upon return.

He further emphasized the importance of applying the training outcomes to strengthen early warning systems, improve rapid response coordination, and enhance cooperation among relevant disaster management agencies to reduce risks and protect lives.

This initiative reflects a growing national focus on human capital investment within Somalia’s disaster management sector as a key driver of institutional preparedness and resilience.

Experts highlight that international training programs play a critical role in enhancing national capacity, improving emergency response systems, and supporting community protection against increasingly frequent natural disasters.
