GAROWE — The Ministry of Environment, Pasture, and Climate Change of Puntland State, Somalia, participated yesterday in an extensive consultative meeting dedicated to discussing the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) study for the “Sinan” development project. The project is being implemented in collaboration with international institutions and local authorities in the cities of Garowe and Bosaso.
This meeting comes within the framework of diligent efforts by the state to ensure that proposed development projects comply with the highest international environmental and social standards. The initiative seeks to achieve a precise balance between the requirements of urban and service-related advancement and the necessity of preserving natural resources and the safety of local communities.
During the session, Ahmed Balshali, Director of the Legal Affairs Department at the Ministry of Environment, provided a detailed technical presentation on the procedures and legal controls adopted for preparing impact assessment studies. He clarified the procedural pathways these studies undergo and emphasized the importance of strictly adhering to national regulations governing this vital sector within Puntland State.
Balshali affirmed during his presentation that strict compliance with the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment Law is the cornerstone for ensuring the long-term sustainability of development projects. He stressed that adherence by implementing entities to established standards is an imperative necessity to avoid any potential negative repercussions that could affect the environmental balance or social fabric.
The meeting saw active participation from representatives of the Ministries of Agriculture and Planning, alongside local government officials from Garowe and Bosaso. Discussions focused on strengthening institutional coordination and establishing joint frameworks to ensure project implementation according to a comprehensive development vision that integrates environmental and social dimensions at all stages.
