MOGADISHU — The Qatari Embassy in Mogadishu hosted today an official meeting between Dr. Maryam Qasim Ahmed, Chairperson of the Independent National Human Rights Commission, and H.E. Dr. Abdullah bin Salem Al-Nuaimi, Ambassador of Qatar to Somalia, as reported by the Commission’s official Facebook page.
The discussions at the embassy premises focused on creating a roadmap to strengthen partnership and cooperation between the Somali National Commission and the National Human Rights Committee of Qatar; the Commission’s official page stated that the meeting discussed ways to exchange technical expertise and develop human resources to serve fundamental rights and freedoms.
Both sides reviewed mechanisms for developing institutional management and preparing specialized human rights reports, emphasizing the importance of adopting best international practices in monitoring human rights status and ensuring that supervisory performance aligns with global standards adopted by independent national bodies in both brotherly countries.
The talks included ways to coordinate on ensuring the rights of detainees, with the Commission’s official platform reporting the parties’ agreement on the necessity of exchanging expertise in monitoring detention centers and developing field researchers’ skills to ensure the rule of law and human dignity according to established rights principles.
Dr. Maryam Qasim Ahmed expressed Somalia’s appreciation for Qatar’s historic and continuous support, praising Doha’s pioneering role within the UN Human Rights Council and valuing its positions supporting international resolutions aimed at strengthening the institutional building of the country’s human rights sector.
The meeting explored ways to benefit from Qatar’s successful experience in building technical and administrative capacities within national bodies, contributing to enabling the Somali Commission to perform its supervisory duties with high professionalism and transparency that keeps pace with national aspirations for stability and development.
Both parties emphasized the necessity of activating the “Paris Principles” governing the work of national institutions, considering that the independence of these bodies and the development of their technical tools represent the true guarantee for promoting justice and equality and fulfilling the Somali people’s ambitions.
The meeting addressed the importance of joint coordination in international and regional forums to ensure unified positions supporting just human rights causes and contributing to projecting the Somali experience in human rights development to broader horizons of cooperation with active international partners.
