MOGADISHU — H.E. Daud Aweis Jama, Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism of the Federal Government of Somalia, extended his sincere congratulations to the media community on World Press Freedom Day; praising the fundamental role of the press in advancing peacebuilding and strengthening democratic foundations, as reported by the Somali National News Agency (SONNA).
The Minister emphasized that this annual occasion represents a pivotal opportunity to celebrate the significant contributions of journalists in raising public awareness, safeguarding information integrity, and fostering mutual trust between institutions and society to serve the country’s stability and growth.
His Excellency noted that this year’s commemoration coincides with major technical transformations in global media, particularly the integration of Artificial Intelligence, stressing the need to adapt these modern tools to serve peace, conflict resolution, and stability in today’s world.
The Minister of Information underscored that Somali journalism bears a grave national and ethical responsibility in advocating for justice and supporting governance efforts, asserting that responsible reporting is the cornerstone of the democratic progress the country seeks.
H.E. Daud Aweis pointed out that as this day coincides with Somalia’s electoral period, it necessitates responsible and professional media coverage that supports peaceful elections and promotes social cohesion among all segments of the population.
Somalia, through the Ministry of Information, renewed the Federal Government’s steadfast commitment to enhancing press freedoms, ensuring the safety and protection of media professionals, and fostering a work environment that enables them to perform their duties with integrity and high professionalism.
The Minister explained that the Ministry will continue its efforts in implementing professional capacity-building programs for journalists and strengthening coordination between media institutions and government agencies to ensure the development of a resilient and forward-looking media sector.
The Somali National News Agency stated that the government places the development of the media sector among its strategic priorities, believing that a free and responsible press is the mirror reflecting the people’s aspirations and a key partner in preserving national and cultural identity.
In his concluding remarks, His Excellency expressed his vision for a leading Somali media model characterized by transparency and credibility, contributing effectively to shaping a bright and sustainable future for Somalia where values of freedom, justice, and equality prevail.
