Somali foreign ministry discusses strategic cooperation with UN

MOGADISHU — Somalia, represented by H.E. Hamza Hadow, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, received yesterday, Sunday, in Mogadishu, Ms. Shoko Noda, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Director of the UNDP Crisis Bureau, as reported by the Ministry’s official Facebook page.

The bilateral discussions focused on strengthening strategic cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aligning with the ambitious national priorities adopted by the country, particularly in sustainable development and preparations for the upcoming electoral processes.

Both sides explored ways to align UN plans with the Somali national agenda, emphasizing the importance of integrated efforts in humanitarian response and institutional capacity building to ensure comprehensive economic and social stability across all Somali regions.

For her part, the UN official praised Somalia’s growing and influential role on the international stage, especially following its membership in the UN Security Council and its accession to the East African Community (EAC), asserting that these steps enhance the country’s position as an active regional and international player.

The meeting also addressed sustainable solutions for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and tackling the impact of climate crises, with both parties stressing the need to accelerate joint efforts under federal government leadership to ensure essential support reaches vulnerable populations with dignity.

Both parties agreed to activate field-based mechanisms to enhance community resilience through innovative long-term development programs that contribute to reducing reliance on emergency relief and transitioning toward the phase of production, construction, and sustainable growth sought by the nation.

Somalia expressed its appreciation for the long-standing partnership with the UNDP, reaffirming its commitment to providing all necessary facilities for the success of joint projects that serve the Somali people’s aspirations for peace, stability, and comprehensive economic and social revival.

At the conclusion of the meeting, officials reaffirmed the continuity of high-level coordination to ensure the implementation of international commitments, focusing on the principle of national ownership of development projects to strengthen state sovereignty and resource management for the public good.

These strategic talks embody Somalia’s determination to draft a new chapter in its relations with international organizations based on transparency and parity in development work. By integrating UN goals into its national vision, the country reaffirms its path toward restoring institutional leadership, transforming humanitarian challenges into opportunities for growth and advancement, ensuring a future defined by justice and prosperity for all its citizens.
