MOGADISHU — H.E. Mohmoud Moallim Abdulle, Chairman of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), received a high-level delegation from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Ms. Marit Fikke, at the National Emergency Operations Center in Mogadishu, where they reviewed the bilateral cooperation between the two friendly nations and explored ways to further develop relief and humanitarian frameworks to address recurrent natural crises.

The discussions focused on the rapid field developments and the repercussions of the widening drought, which has affected more than 74 districts, leading to a surge in urgent humanitarian needs and highlighting the necessity of international collaboration to alleviate the suffering of impacted communities. During the visit, the Norwegian delegation was briefed on the technical mechanisms utilized by the center for disaster monitoring and data analysis to ensure rapid and efficient field interventions.

Ms. Marit Fikke expressed her country’s appreciation for the pivotal role played by SoDMA in disaster management, praising the agency’s professional efficiency and dedicated efforts in implementing emergency relief operations to mitigate the effects of the drought, which reflects the institutional progress the agency has made in responding to growing humanitarian needs with capability and expertise.

In response, the Chairman emphasized that the Kingdom of Norway remains an active strategic partner for Somalia, valuing the sustained Norwegian support that directly contributes to strengthening community resilience programs and building national capacities, noting that this cooperation reflects the depth of bilateral relations and the shared commitment to enhancing humanitarian security against transboundary climate challenges.

His Excellency further highlighted the agency’s aspiration to deepen technical partnerships with the Norwegian side, particularly in knowledge transfer, the advancement of early warning systems, and innovative financing for climate risks, ensuring a solid foundation for proactive disaster management and the reduction of future material and human losses.

Both parties concluded the meeting by reaffirming the importance of intensifying international coordination to confront climate change challenges, while committing to continued joint efforts to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those in need according to the highest standards of transparency and institutional integrity, which remains a top priority for the agency to maintain the trust of international partners.

The meeting also stressed the necessity of unifying efforts between donor agencies and national institutions to ensure the effective implementation of humanitarian response plans, focusing on sustainable solutions that enable local communities to adapt to extreme climate conditions and restore dignified livelihoods in the areas most affected by drought.

The session ended with both sides reaffirming the importance of continued diplomatic and humanitarian dialogue to enhance national readiness and strive toward achieving comprehensive developmental stability that protects the country from future disaster risks and preserves human dignity in the face of the region’s accelerating climate changes.

These high-level diplomatic engagements are part of the Somali Disaster Management Agency’s strategy to strengthen humanitarian diplomacy and mobilize necessary international support for national response plans, ensuring the protection of vulnerable populations and achieving developmental stability amidst accelerating climate changes.
