Jubbaland and UNICEF discuss enhancing climate response

KISMAYO — Officials from the Jubbaland regional administration held an extensive meeting in Kismayo with a high-level delegation from UNICEF to discuss strengthening cooperation and coordinating relief and development programs.

The Shabelle Media Network reported that the discussions focused on expanding the international organization’s initiatives in Jubbaland, particularly in vital education, clean water provision, nutrition, and healthcare for children and women.

Jubbaland’s Minister of Planning, Investment, and International Cooperation, H.E. Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, stated in remarks carried by the aforementioned media house that top priority was given to addressing the severe drought impacting vast areas of the state.

The Network confirmed in its field coverage that the ongoing drought has significantly affected both livelihoods and livestock, necessitating urgent international action to align relief efforts with the growing needs in affected regions.

Jubbaland officials emphasized, according to the same source, the pressing need to accelerate humanitarian aid and implement sustainable development projects that mitigate climate volatility and bolster community resilience.

The news platform noted that this meeting comes at a critical juncture as harsh climatic conditions worsen, mandating deeper partnerships with international agencies to ensure sustained support and the delivery of vital supplies to remote areas.

Both parties agreed to establish an advanced coordination mechanism to ensure the efficient execution of joint programs, focusing on innovative solutions in water and food security in line with Jubbaland’s strategic orientations.

The meeting reviewed ways to enhance social protection for vulnerable groups, emphasizing the importance of investing in basic infrastructure as part of the state’s vision for long-term economic and social stability.

The gathering concluded by renewing the commitment to intensifying field operations and technical cooperation, seeking a comprehensive humanitarian response that protects future generations and secures livelihoods against recurring environmental shocks.

Jubbaland serves as the front line in confronting complex climate shocks in Somalia, making the partnership with UNICEF a cornerstone in safeguarding children’s rights and securing a humanitarian future. This high-level coordination represents a strategic shift toward “resilience-based response,” where emergency relief is integrated with sustainable development plans to ensure water and food sovereignty while enhancing the capacity of local institutions to manage transboundary environmental crises.
