MOGADISHU — The Union of Somali Universities warned today against plans to designate schools, institutes, and universities as polling stations in the upcoming elections, asserting that such a move could jeopardize student safety, disrupt education, and compromise the neutrality of academic institutions.
According to the Hiiraan Online (HOL) news site, the union issued a statement urging the federal government and regional administrations to reconsider decisions using educational facilities as voting centers. It called on electoral authorities to seek alternative venues that do not interfere with academic and educational activities.
The Hiiraan Online news site reported that the union expressed concern over security risks facing students and teachers if educational landmarks are transformed into electoral arenas, especially given the current political and security climate. It warned that involving educational institutions in political processes sets a “dangerous precedent” that threatens their independence and developmental mission.
As detailed by the Hiiraan Online news site, the university union emphasized the need to protect the academic calendar and ensure the psychological well-being of students. It called on the Ministry of Education and security agencies to take clear measures to safeguard school and university campuses during the election period to maintain a safe and stable learning environment.
