KISMAYO — H.E. Ahmed Mohamed Islam “Madobe,” President of Jubaland State, issued a decree establishing a seven-member ministerial committee to coordinate the urgent response to the worsening drought, which has caused severe food and water shortages across the state.
According to the Hiiraan Online (HOL) news site, the committee is chaired by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management. It includes the ministers of Interior, Energy and Water, Livestock, Health, Women’s Affairs, and Youth, tasked with assessing emergency needs and directing aid to the hardest-hit districts, such as Kismayo, El Waq, and Afmadow.
The Hiiraan Online news site reported that this move comes in response to humanitarian findings indicating that approximately 1.5 million people in the state require urgent assistance, with 78% of households facing food insecurity and millions of livestock at risk.
As detailed by the Hiiraan Online news site, the climatic crisis has triggered new waves of displacement and a sharp increase in water prices, doubling the burden on citizens. The state is currently seeking to enhance coordination with international partners to ensure the flow of relief supplies and protect threatened livelihoods.
