Fresh displacement in Hiran due to Shabelle river floods

BALETWEYNE — The Shabelle River has once again caused significant displacement in Baletweyne, the capital of the Hiran region, as floods continue to devastate the area. Numerous families have been forced to leave their homes in the neighborhoods of Bundaweyne and Howlwadaag due to rising water levels and breached riverbanks.

Last night and this morning, the river broke through the branches of Doonsubagle and Farah Geri in the affected neighborhoods, exacerbating the flooding situation. Despite previous efforts to manage the flood risks, the unexpected surge in water levels has led to extensive displacement. Many residents from these neighborhoods, which had shown signs of recovery, are now facing renewed hardship.

The floods have created an urgent crisis in Baletweyne, with fears growing as the Shabelle River’s water level continues to rise. The local population remains on edge, worried about the increasing threat of further flooding and displacement.

It has only been six months since the city experienced one of the worst floods in its history at the end of 2023. The recurrence of flooding has come at a time when the residents of Baletweyne are still struggling to recover from the previous disaster. The repeated inundations have severely hampered rehabilitation efforts and left many without adequate resources or shelter.

Local authorities and humanitarian organizations are mobilizing to provide emergency assistance to the newly displaced families. However, the scale of the flooding and the immediate needs of the affected populations present significant challenges. Urgent appeals for support and relief have been made to both national and international communities to help mitigate the impact of this ongoing crisis.
