IGAD ministerial meeting on drought in the region begins in Nairobi

NAIROBI — Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) ministerial and experts meeting on the current drought situation in the Horn of Africa region has commenced.

The meeting began in the National capital Nairobi, Kenya on Friday, May 13.

Ministers drawn from various countries across the region are partaking in the Kenyan discussions on the debilitating effects of ongoing devastating drought in the region and are expected to adapt measures to mitigate the drought.

IGAD estimates that 8.1 million people are food insecure in #Ethiopia, 3.5 million in Kenya, 7.7 million in Somalia, 8.9 million in South Sudan, 10.6 million in Sudan, and 1.6 million in Uganda.

Somalia, Kenya, Sudan, Djibouti, and Ethiopia are among the countries severely affected by the drought.

The drought has claimed the lives of several people and sparked the death of huge number of livestock in the region especially in Somalia.
