AFMADOW – The Jubaland State Government continues to implement plans aimed at strengthening essential services in Afmadow District of Lower Juba region through projects focused on improving healthcare facilities and developing water resources. The initiatives are part of broader efforts to enhance living conditions, support local communities, and invest in vital sectors directly linked to citizens’ daily lives, particularly in areas facing increasing challenges due to climate pressures and economic difficulties.
As part of efforts to improve healthcare services, Jubaland Minister of Health Ismail Ahmed Gars conducted a field visit to the expansion project of Afmadow General Hospital, where he reviewed the final stages of construction and equipment installation, as well as the progress achieved in completing the project. The minister was accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Health and local health authorities, who assessed the readiness of the newly developed sections and the services expected to be provided once the facility becomes operational.
The Minister of Health emphasized that the expansion of Afmadow General Hospital represents an important step toward strengthening healthcare capacity in the area, noting that the upgraded facility will increase the hospital’s ability to receive patients and improve the quality of medical services available to residents. He added that the government places strong emphasis on developing health institutions, considering them a key foundation for improving citizens’ wellbeing and enhancing the healthcare system’s ability to respond to growing needs.
In the water sector, Jubaland Minister of Energy and Water Resources inspected Todobogo Well in Afmadow, one of the main water sources serving residents of the district and surrounding communities. The visit focused on assessing the technical condition of the well, the level of services it provides, and the challenges that may affect its sustainability, particularly amid increasing demand for water and the need for more reliable sources.
The Minister of Energy and Water Resources stated that the government is preparing to implement a rehabilitation project for Todobogo Well aimed at improving its operational efficiency, enhancing water quality, and ensuring a sustainable supply for local communities. He stressed that developing water infrastructure remains a priority for Jubaland, especially in areas affected by drought and climate change, highlighting that access to safe water is closely connected to public health, development, and social and economic stability.
The health and water projects in Afmadow are part of Jubaland’s wider vision to strengthen public services and improve basic infrastructure across the state. The government considers the development of these sectors essential for moving from temporary emergency responses toward sustainable solutions that enhance communities’ ability to cope with challenges and achieve more stable local development.
Observers say that upgrading hospitals and improving water sources represent important steps in strengthening the role of local administrations in delivering essential services, particularly in areas that have long faced limited access to healthcare and safe water. They also emphasize that the long-term success of such projects depends on continued investment, maintenance, and the availability of qualified personnel to ensure their sustainability.
Health and water services remain among Somalia’s most significant development challenges, as many areas continue to face shortages in medical facilities and sustainable water sources due to recurrent droughts, climate change impacts, and limited infrastructure. These challenges have encouraged government institutions and development partners to prioritize projects that strengthen community resilience and improve access to essential services.
In recent years, the Jubaland State Government has implemented several programmes aimed at improving public services, including rehabilitating healthcare facilities, upgrading water resources, and supporting development projects that directly benefit communities. These efforts form part of a broader path toward strengthening stability, improving quality of life, and building communities better prepared to face future challenges.
