Somaliland boosts refugee awareness on rights services

HARGEISA — The Ministry of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs of the Government of Somaliland today concluded a two-day awareness program (17–18 June) dedicated to refugees and asylum seekers, aimed at enhancing their understanding of public services, rights and responsibilities, and reinforcing their role in promoting security, stability, and peaceful coexistence within society.

The program provided participants with detailed briefings on available essential services and procedures for obtaining legal and official documentation, including business licenses, driving permits, and other relevant government services.

A range of Somaliland government institutions participated in the implementation of the program, including the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Justice, health professionals, the Human Rights Commission, the Police Force, Immigration authorities, and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), reflecting an integrated approach aimed at strengthening awareness and improving access to services.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Legal Clinic of the University of Hargeisa also contributed by delivering specialized sessions on legal frameworks, refugee rights, and access to justice mechanisms.

Over the two-day program, discussions covered a wide range of topics, including services provided by government institutions, the rights and responsibilities of refugees and asylum seekers, and peaceful dispute resolution mechanisms aimed at strengthening social cohesion and reducing potential tensions.

The Ministry of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs of the Government of Somaliland stated that this initiative is part of its ongoing efforts to enhance legal and service awareness among refugees and asylum seekers, and to support their positive integration into society in a way that promotes stability and community development.

The Government of Somaliland, through the Ministry of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs, places increasing emphasis on community awareness programs targeting refugees and asylum seekers as an important tool for strengthening social cohesion and improving access to public services.

These initiatives are part of broader efforts to reinforce the rule of law, expand government service delivery, and ensure that vulnerable groups can fully access their basic rights, thereby contributing to stability and sustainable development within society.
