Health ministry advances national health workforce development

MOGADISHU — The Ministry of Health and Social Care of the Federal Government of Somalia published a media update on its official Facebook page, confirming the convening of its quarterly health workforce development meeting in Mogadishu, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen medical capacity and improve the quality of healthcare services.

According to the update, the meeting reviewed progress achieved in human resource development programs, discussed key challenges facing the health sector, and explored ways to build a more efficient and sustainable healthcare system.

The meeting brought together Ministry officials, public hospital directors, private health sector representatives, medical education institutions, health experts, and international partners, who exchanged views on strengthening healthcare workforce capacity and expanding training and professional development programs.

Discussions focused on improving the quality of medical education and continuous training, as well as enhancing the skills of healthcare workers to meet the growing demand for health services across the country.

Participants also reviewed technical reports and studies on the status of the national health workforce and discussed approaches to improving planning and ensuring a fair distribution of medical personnel across regions.

Dr. Fartuun Shariif Mohamed, Director of the Human Resources Department at the Ministry, emphasized that developing human resources for health is a cornerstone of health sector reform, highlighting the importance of sustained investment in healthcare personnel.

The meeting concluded with a call to strengthen cooperation between the Ministry of Health, academic institutions, and international partners to support the development of a qualified health workforce capable of meeting community needs and advancing universal health coverage.

Health workforce development remains a central pillar of Somalia’s health sector reform agenda amid ongoing challenges related to shortages of skilled medical personnel and disparities in service delivery. The Federal Government continues, through the Ministry of Health and its partners, to invest in training and capacity building to improve healthcare quality and strengthen the national health system.
