HARGEISA — The Ministry of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs of Somaliland held a high-level coordination meeting today, in its second edition, to follow up and accelerate the implementation mechanisms of the “Youth Economic Empowerment for Internally Displaced Persons” project, a strategic step aimed at enhancing living stability and providing sustainable developmental opportunities for the most vulnerable.
The meeting, hosted in the capital Hargeisa, focused primarily on conducting a comprehensive and objective review of the progress achieved by the project since its inception, as well as analyzing current field and logistical challenges, and setting effective measures and alternative plans capable of realizing the developmental goals envisioned for this ambitious humanitarian program.
The gathering witnessed official emphasis by the Somaliland government on the critical importance of enhancing inter-institutional partnerships and role integration, stressing the necessity of joint coordination to unify and direct efforts between the Ministry of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs, the National Organization for Women, and the Youth Development Fund to ensure the highest efficiency.
Participants agreed on the necessity of integrating initiatives aimed at expanding economic opportunities, creating sustainable employment channels, and empowering internally displaced youth to possess production tools, ensuring their transformation into active energies that contribute to driving economic growth and elevating social development in the country.
The gathered parties explained that strengthening the self-capabilities of displaced youth constitutes the cornerstone for building a sustainable and stable future, as the project aims to equip targeted individuals with entrepreneurial skills, vocational expertise, and the resources necessary to achieve self-reliance and contribute positively to their local communities.
This compounding humanitarian initiative seeks to mitigate the negative impacts of internal displacement and treat structural imbalances in the labor market by providing specialized financing and training programs that match youth aspirations and align with the actual requirements of local production and business sectors across Somaliland.
The meeting concluded with a broad consensus and the formulation of joint commitments to enhance coordination among partner institutions, accelerating the pace of implementing the project’s field activities, to ensure full transparency standards and achieve tangible results that lift the quality of life for vulnerable populations.
Evaluation reports indicated that the combined efforts of government institutions, women’s organizations, and youth funds in this project represent an advanced model for integrated developmental action in Somaliland, which transcends providing temporary relief aid toward innovating radical and sustainable solutions to humanitarian crises.
This intensified developmental movement in Somaliland embodies a profound understanding of the close link between youth economic empowerment and achieving comprehensive social peace and societal stability. Addressing the internally displaced persons’ crisis through vocational rehabilitation and economic integration, rather than continuous reliance on relief baskets, represents a qualitative shift in the philosophy of humanitarian and developmental management adopted by the authorities in Hargeisa to reinforce the pillars of their self-reliance. This inspiring institutional experience places international donors and partners before a genuine responsibility to scale up financial support dedicated to these sustainable funds and projects, considering them the true and sole investment capable of transforming idle youth energies in displacement camps into a driving force for building a resilient national economy.
