Mogadishu workshop strengthens national human rights capacity

MOGADISHU — A four-day specialized workshop aimed at enhancing the institutional and professional capacities of staff members from the National Independent Human Rights Commission officially opened on Monday in Mogadishu.

According to a media statement released via the verified digital platform of the National Independent Human Rights Commission on “Facebook”, the workshop’s scientific tracks were designed in coordination with international experts from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, with direct technical support from the Human Rights and Protection Group of the United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia.

The training focuses on strengthening the professional knowledge of commission personnel and improving their expertise in monitoring, documentation, protection mechanisms, and international human rights standards.

Speaking during the opening session, the Head of the Human Rights and Protection Group at the UN mission, Kirsten Young, highlighted the importance of investing in institutional capacity-building, stressing that developing skilled personnel is essential for advancing the protection of rights and freedoms.

Young noted that the workshop forms part of broader joint efforts aimed at empowering national institutions to carry out their responsibilities more effectively and independently, in alignment with international human rights principles.

For her part, the Chairperson of the National Independent Human Rights Commission, Dr. Maryan Qasim, officially inaugurated the workshop and encouraged participants to fully utilize the training opportunity in order to strengthen institutional performance and improve the quality of field human rights work.

The National Independent Human Rights Commission continues its efforts to promote a culture of human rights in Somalia through professional development, institutional strengthening, and expanded cooperation with international partners, contributing to the advancement of justice, the protection of fundamental freedoms, and the reinforcement of human dignity and the rule of law.

The launch of this specialized human rights workshop falls within the comprehensive strategic vision adopted by Somalia to modernize and develop its constitutional and oversight structures. Sustainable investment in building the capacities of human rights personnel serves as a key pillar for enhancing good governance and ensures the activation of accountability and transparency mechanisms, in line with the aspirations of Somali society, while elevating the Federal State’s standing in international human rights forums as an active partner committed to preserving human dignity and establishing the rule of law.
