Puntland denies reports of impending storms and rain

GAROWE — The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management and the Water and Land Information Management Center in Puntland have categorically denied reports regarding impending severe storms.

A joint statement issued by the Ministry and the Center confirmed that warning letters circulating on social media attributed to the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) are false.

The statement clarified that the reports claiming heavy rains and cyclones would hit Puntland regions between May 12 and 17, 2026, were found to be unofficial and unreliable after a formal technical verification.

Authorities expressed regret over the sharing of groundless information with the public, noting that such unsubstantiated data lacks proper reference and could lead to unnecessary fear and social confusion.

Media outlets and the general public in Puntland are urged to remain vigilant and avoid disseminating unverified information that could disrupt public order and safety.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management emphasized that all climate-related warnings and emergency status updates must be sourced exclusively from authorized official channels.

The official statement specified that valid weather alerts can be found on the formal websites of the Ministry and the Center, as well as their verified official social media platforms.

Furthermore, the public was encouraged to follow state-owned media and the official platforms of approved government partners as the only reliable outlets for natural disaster information in Puntland.

As stated in the report, the Ministry and the Center remain committed to continuously monitoring weather conditions and providing accurate data to the public in a timely manner.

Following these developments, Puntland reaffirms the readiness of its monitoring agencies to handle any real emergency, noting that precise technical coordination is the only way to protect lives and property.

Accurate weather forecasting is not merely a technical matter but a national and ethical responsibility that demands strict adherence to scientific and institutional standards. Transparent communication between the state and its citizens serves as a shield against misinformation that might obstruct effective response paths during real emergencies, ensuring a safe and stable environment built upon verified facts and documented data.
