Somalia launches national plan for sustainable cooling

MOGADISHU — The Somali Ministry of Environment and Climate Change officially launched today in Mogadishu the “National Cooling Action Plan” (NCAP), a strategic step through which Somalia demonstrates its commitment to tackling environmental challenges, as published on the Ministry’s Official Facebook Page.

The launch ceremony saw a notable presence of representatives from government institutions, NGOs, and regional administrations, with active participation from academics, environmental experts, and private sector leaders, according to the Ministry’s Media Platform.

Mrs. Hafsa Omar Abdullahi, Director of the Environment Department, opened the session, noting in her speech that this plan places Somalia among the nations striving to curb global warming by adopting smart and climate-friendly cooling solutions.

The national plan focuses on innovating sustainable cooling systems that contribute to reducing carbon emissions and protecting biodiversity, aligning with the international pledges made by Somalia to enhance climate resilience under UN agreements.

Participants discussed mechanisms to integrate modern cooling technologies into infrastructure and public services to improve quality of life and mitigate the impact of heat on the community, strengthening its ability to adapt to severe weather fluctuations in the region.

The discussions emphasized the pivotal importance of the private sector in investing in clean energy, as the Ministry seeks to create a participatory environment that supports Somalia’s transition toward a “Green Economy” and ensures sustainable resource use.

This vital project is part of a comprehensive national vision, as sustainable cooling technologies support food and medicine security by securing advanced cold chains, enhancing the resilience of health and agricultural sectors against environmental threats.

The meeting concluded by affirming the need for joint coordination to ensure the plan’s goals are translated into reality, achieving Somalia’s aspirations to protect its environment and secure a bright, sustainable future for generations to come, free from climate risks.

The “National Cooling Action Plan” embodies an advanced Somali awareness of the necessity to balance urban growth with environmental preservation. This initiative led by Somalia is not merely a technical solution, but a human message declaring the maturity of its will to build a “Green” future, placing nature’s protection and citizen dignity at the heart of its journey toward recovery and comprehensive revival.
