Ministry of environment leads national sustainable cooling plan

MOGADISHU — In a step reflecting its commitment to safeguarding the atmosphere and enhancing public health, Somalia is moving forward in establishing the foundations of modern environmental monitoring, launching a new phase of international cooperation to protect the purity of its skies and ensure a sustainable future for its citizens.

The Somali Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, represented by the Pollution Monitoring Section, launched the “Strengthening Air Quality Management in Somalia” project during a high-level virtual seminar featuring a select group of international and local partners, as detailed in the press post issued via the Ministry’s official digital platform on Facebook.

This strategic project is part of the “Targeted Expert Assistance” initiative funded by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and implemented by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), a move through which Somalia aims to adopt the highest international environmental standards, according to SoOHA’s review of the Ministry’s official source.

The meeting saw wide participation from government institutions, IGAD, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Somali universities, and development partners to discuss mechanisms for institutionalizing air pollution monitoring and developing highly efficient climate-friendly policies.

Discussions focused on the strategic importance of developing air quality monitoring systems, enhancing the technical capacities of national cadres, and raising coordination levels to ensure the formulation of environmental legislation that contributes to reducing carbon emissions harmful to public health and the ecosystem.

The Ministry reviewed the pivotal role of the Pollution Monitoring Section and the Somali Meteorological Authority in tracking climate variables, emphasizing the need to build an accurate database to support decision-making in protecting the atmosphere from increasing industrial and environmental pollutants.

The meeting also addressed ways to enhance technical cooperation with specialized international institutes to ensure knowledge transfer and the localization of modern technology in air quality measurement, contributing to a healthy and sustainable urban environment that guarantees citizens’ rights to clean air.

The Somali Ministry of Environment and Climate Change expressed its deep appreciation to all international partners and academic entities that contributed to launching this developmental path, affirming that environmental protection lies at the heart of the comprehensive development priorities pursued by the state to ensure resource sustainability and climate protection.

Participants stressed the importance of continued integration between various sectors to ensure this project aligns with national climate change plans, strengthening Somalia’s position as an active partner in global efforts to protect Planet Earth.

The event concluded by affirming that this project represents the cornerstone for building an integrated environmental system, through which Somalia aims to achieve the desired balance between urban revival and preserving the purity of nature for future generations in a healthy homeland.

The launch of the Air Quality Management project marks a new chapter of environmental sovereignty as Somalia strives to restore its natural health. The partnership between national institutions and esteemed global expertise confirms that Somalia is now leading proactive initiatives to safeguard its citizens’ right to a pure environment, proving its active and responsible presence in the international community striving to protect the climate and ensure a brighter, safer future for humanity.
