Planning director general maps green energy and development pathways

MOGADISHU — Mr. Abdifatah Abdulkadir Farah, Director General of the Ministry of Planning, Investment, and Economic Development, participated today in Mogadishu in the 2nd meeting of the Steering Committee for the Green Energy and Economic Development (GEED) program, as reported by the Ministry’s Official Facebook Page.

The meeting focused on assessing the program’s progress and its strategic role in supporting the implementation of the National Transformation Plan (NTP 2025–2029), with the attendance of Mr. Abdullahi Hassan Aden, Director General of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, and officials from the EU and German Cooperation, according to the Ministry’s Official Platform.

Participants discussed mechanisms to enhance coordination to overcome field challenges and drew a roadmap for future phases of the program, which aims to create a qualitative shift in the renewable energy sector and improve the investment climate.

The GEED program, supported by the European Union and the German Government, is a cornerstone of the national shift toward clean energy, focusing on empowering Somali youth by developing their technical skills to meet the demands of the green labor market.

During his intervention, the Director General emphasized that the program represents an effective national response to climate change, noting its pivotal role in job creation, supporting the private sector, and expanding sustainable energy resources to stimulate economic activity.

The meeting also addressed the importance of integration between government institutions and international partners to ensure project sustainability, as the program seeks to build energy infrastructure that reduces operational costs for national companies.

Discussions stressed the need to align the program’s goals with national development priorities, focusing on high-need areas to ensure that sustainable energy services reach all segments of Somali society, serving stability and development goals.

International partners expressed their commitment to continued technical and financial support for green energy projects in Somalia, praising government efforts in formulating attractive investment policies that ensure capital flow toward vital developmental sectors.

The meeting concluded by affirming the importance of regular monitoring and evaluation to ensure quality outputs, ensuring that the GEED program remains a primary driver of sustainable economic growth and protection of natural resources for future generations.

These Somali government actions embody an ambitious vision toward a “green” future that transcends environmental and economic fluctuations. The marriage between investment in renewable energy and the empowerment of young talent represents the true guarantee for achieving sustainable economic independence. Green energy is viewed here not merely as an environmental alternative, but as a sovereign engine placing Somalia at the forefront of regional nations striving for comprehensive development and climate resilience.
